The King of Portugal, Philip 1 commanded Fort Jesus to be built in order to safeguard East African Portuguese interests such as the trade route to India and the port of Mombasa.

Fort Jesus is today considered one of the best examples of Portuguese architecture from the sixteenth century though an Italian Batistsa Cairato designed it.

Though it was once a military barrack and later a prison, today it houses the world renowned Fort Jesus Museum.
